I was speaking to a group of women recently, and after the presentation they asked me in life thus far what I would do differently, what changes in life I would make, if any, in essence what regrets do I have. As I thought about the questions, I was clear about its intent, however I realized that I don’t look at my life that way anymore.
I don’t focus on my past I look toward my future. Too many of us can’t move pass where we are in life because we are so consumed with what happened yesterday that we cannot prepare for tomorrow. I’ve matured to realize that I have absolutely no control over every situation in my life or the cause and effect of things that have been painful and uncomfortable. However I do have control over my response to it.
Whether I will allow it to break me or make me stronger is totally up to me. I recognize I have the option to choose that my current circumstances don’t have to be my permanent outcome or solution. Too often we spend so much time being concerned about yesterday’s hurts and pains that we can’t improve upon our lives and situations today.
There are those of us with family members who are still mad at each other over issues and arguments that occurred twenty five years ago. Although you have had some challenges in your younger years, you are now committed to a positive adult life and life style but no matter what you’ve done to improve your life since that time they want to continue to remind you of where you’ve been instead of where you’re going.
The bitter disagreements and hurtful statements have turned into lifelong emotional cancers. I believe regrets are like a crutch, they serve as opportunities for you to hold on to your past and cripple your future. So what things have happened in your life that you did not like and why wish that things could have been different yesterday when you can take control of your tomorrow today. No matter what happens in life know that it is all in divine order.
