You've heard her hot new single Yeah bangin' your speakers on every major station in the city and the Michigan FrontPage got a chance to catch up with the diva to find out what drives her, who she is and what it is to experience Vina Mills.
FrontPage: How did you get your start in the music business?
Vina Mills: I grew up in a musical home. My father was a musician and songwriter so I was introduced at a very young age.
FP: Where does your love of dancing come from?
VM: My love of dancing comes from everyday life. I've always been very private so whenever I would have a problem with a guy or friends or family, I would go in the corner somewhere and dance it off. I didn't call my girls, I released that pain through dance.
FP: How would you describe your style of performing?
VM: My style of performing is super high energy, very raw, passionate and genuine. Performing is a great highlight to being an artist. My style of performing is unlike anyone else you have or will ever see.
FP: Talk about some of your experiences in the music industry; who have you worked with?
VM: To my credit I've been blessed to dance on the Scream 5 tour with Sammie alongside Ne-Yo and Omarion. The Screamfest Tour with Yung Joc alongside Ciara and T.I., and I've also danced for Lloyd and did 106 & Park with Usher. I've been very blessed!
FP: Who are your biggest influences?
VM: I'm influenced by people like Marvin Gaye, Tina Turner and James Brown; these are people that respect the art and are genuinely passionate about their craft.
FP: What are some obstacles that you have had to overcome in order to follow your dream of becoming an entertainer?
VM: I've experienced the unthinkable to make it in the industry: growing up as a woman without my mom, doors closing in my face because I'm dark-skinned, not being taken seriously as a singer because of being a dancer first. Just the harsh reality of growing up in Detroit is a challenge in itself. But God saw me through it and I'm grateful for that strength.
FP: What has been your biggest accomplishment thus far?
VM: Signing to Live has to be my biggest accomplishment thus far.
FP: What is your biggest regret thus far?
VM: I have no regrets about anything.
Life is about growing and you can't grow from being perfect. I understand and I accept the fact that I am a work in progress.
FP: If you had one thing to do over with respect to your career what would it be?
VM: If I had one thing that I could do over with respect to my career, I would have started it sooner.
FP: Talk about Live the Music Group; how did you get hooked up with them?
VM: Brandon Fletcher and I went to Mumford High together and became friends. He was the CEO of Roundtable Entertainment at the time and I was the choreographer. I was pleased with how enlightened he was about the industry at such a young age. We kept in touch after school and I would confide in him about my problems with previous management and situations, then finally he asked me to come aboard. From there a legacy was built!.
FP: What is the Vina Mills experience like?
VM: The Vina Mills experience is a pleasure that can't be put into words (LOL). It's one of those things you'd just have to see but you will definitely enjoy it.
FP: When it's all said and done, when people walk away from a Vina Mills experience what do you want them to remember about you and your music?
VM: When people walk away from a Vina Mills experience, I want them to be fulfilled. I want them to understand at that point that I do this for them because I am them. So they can trust me and my words because I love them.
