The first fund established to seed growth and opportunity in Detroit by awarding small businesses and entrepreneurs money to grow their businesses has been established in the memory of Colin Hubbell, Detroit native, local developer and the city's biggest fan. The Colin Hubbell Memorial Fundraiser will be held at the Majestic Café's Magic Stick and Garden Bowl on Sunday, Feb. 8, from 4-9 p.m.
The fund, managed through the University Cultural Center Association, will award small businesses and entrepreneurs seed money. Grants will be available to non-profit community organizations to build stronger neighborhoods and more sustainable communities. The grant program also includes a mentoring component that assists grantees with advice on marketing, financing, business resources and networking.
Potential grantees, including nearly 250 small businesses currently located in Midtown and another 12 opening in 2009, must submit a business plan for review by the advisory board as well as an outlined mid-year benchmark and final report. Information regarding the grant application process will be available at www.detroitmidtown.com on April 1.
