SUMMER'S CALLING
Does the anticipation for summer have you thinking “convertible”? Well, whether you’re into muscle cars or premium luxury, this year’s line-up features a range of some of the coolest droptops ever that’ll fit just about everybody’s taste and pocketbook.
Take, for example, the new Ford Mustang convertible.
The droptop version of the 2010 legendary pony car features a more cutting-edge new exterior, and a new interior that has a more plush look and feel inside than the previous model. The convertible has a starting price just under $26, 000.
One of the newest convertibles in this year’s line-up of summer sports cars is the first-ever convertible Infiniti G37 – a topless spin on the popular G Coupe. The new G Convertible has a three-piece folding steel top and a special convertible-focused interior, which features a unique Bose open-air sound system that adjusts equalization based on outside noise, vehicle speed and top position. It also boasts an adaptive climate control system that adjusts fan speed in accordance to top position and vehicle speed.
Infiniti’s Convertible coupe carries a base price of around $45,000.
Lexus is also breaking new ground in the convertible market with an all-new retractable hard-top version of its popular IS sedan. Available in either the 250 or the higher-powered 350 model, the Lexus IS C features a three-panel roof that opens in just 21 seconds, making it easy to transition quickly from coupe to convertible. Though the Lexus IS C, which has an estimated base price of around $40,000, shares the same hood, headlamps, door handles and mirrors as the IS sedans, all other body panels have been designed to blend seamlessly and sleekly with its new three-panel aluminum folding roof.
Porsche has also refreshed the design on its Boxster for 2009 with some subtle refinements that give the sports car a slightly new look while maintaining its classic appeal. The Boxster has also added new standard and optional features including Porsche Communication Management with touchscreen operation, XM Radio, Bluetooth and iPod interface.
It has a base price of around $46,000.
The MINI Cooper also features a new convertible this year with new exterior styling cues and has a special-powered roof with a sliding function that allows the driver to open and close the soft top while the car is in motion up to 18 mph.
The MINI Convertible, which starts out with a base price a little under $25,000, also includes an innovative feature dubbed an ”Openometer” that records the time spent traveling with the roof down.
When it comes to premium droptops, nothing quite says luxury like the Bentley GTC Speed, Bentley’s most powerful convertible ever and inspired by Bentley’s legendary “Speed Models” from the 1920s.
It’s equipped with a modified W12 Bentley engine — a twin-turbo GTC Speed 6.0 liter 12 cylinder that has 600 horsepower and perhaps an even more impressive 553 lbft. of torque.
The GTC Speed features a few exterior details that set it apart visually from the other Bentleys.
This is enough to propel the 5478 lb monster from 0- 60 mph in a scant 4.5 seconds to a top speed of an even 200 mph with the top closed, 195 with the GTC convertible soft top down.
Cost for the Bentley GTC Speed? About $220,000, but you shouldn’t expect anything less from a convertible with these kind of amenities carrying the Bentley nameplate.
Other hot convertibles include the classic Audi TT Roadster , with a base price of $59,800, and the staple BMW 3 Series convertible, with a base price of around $44,000, a carryover from last year.
How about one of these for some fun in the sun?
