ANDERSON SPONSORS AMENDMENT TO INCREASE COLLEGE ACCESS FOR VETERANS
A recent amendment to the Higher Education budget, House Bill 4441, sponsored by State Sen. Glenn S. Anderson, would direct institutions of
higher education throughout Michigan to streamline the admissions process and provide important assistance for veterans. The amendment passed
unanimously in the Senate Appropriations Committee and has now passed the full Senate.

“We need talented individuals to help create a healthy and vibrant state economy and veterans are the perfect leaders to help turn Michigan
around,” said Sen. Anderson. “By passing this amendment we can encourage returning veterans to use their federally entitled benefits in Michigan, infusing our colleges and universities with tuition funds as well as invigorating our college towns. This will translate into greater revenue for businesses and additional tax revenues, giving our economy a much-needed boost.”

This August, the 21st Century G.I. Bill will begin providing the opportunity for veterans of our nation’s current conflicts to attend colleges and
universities across America. This amendment would attract veterans to attend schools in Michigan and remove all obstacles between veterans and
colleges by:

• Offering in-state tuition rates to all veterans.
• Establishing Veteran Syndicate Offices on all public university campuses.
• Simplifying credit transfer and distance learning programs for veterans.
• Establishing an extended application deadline for all veterans.
• Waiving application fees for all veterans.

Anderson has also worked to create a one-stop website for Michigan veterans exploring the options offered by Michigan’s institutions of higher learning. Following Anderson’s proposal, the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and the Department of Information Technology launched this new feature under the “State Universities Veterans Information” tab located on the left hand menu at www.michigan.gov/veterans.
