Famed flautist Alexander Zonjic has released an album tribute to his adopted home of Detroit, entitled “Doin’ the D.” This is Zonjic’s 11th album and is winning the approval of old fans and attracting new ones.
For more than 10 years, Zonjic has been a radio host for V98.7 Smooth Jazz. He is on during the week from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a segment aptly titled “doin’ the D.”
Zonjic said his inspiration for the album stemmed from watching his beloved city undergoing strife. He wanted to pay homage to the city of Detroit, one of the greatest musical cities in the country.
“My inspiration stirred when it was time to make another album,” said Zonjic. “When the city of Detroit took a turn, that’s when I decided that the album’s theme would be more like a tribute to an awesome city.”
Though Zonjic did not compose any of the songs, he brings on jazz heavy-hitters such as Kenny G, James Lloyd and Jeff Lorber to create a musical masterpiece. Zonjic enhances the tracks with his renowned flute skills. This unique synthesis of jazz artists makes for a pleasurable listening experience.
“I was too busy to be able to sit and compose myself,” said Zonjic. “However, I took some old songs I wanted to record and some compositions my friends had written for me, and that sparked a great album.”
“Doin’ the D” is an upbeat and vibrant album. Its tracks are exuberant, with similarities and differences from past records.
“Records are like kids,” said Zonjic. “They’re all going to have different personalities along with the similarities.”
Zonjic believes that people should have a healthy respect for Detroit. A native of Canada, he calls Detroit his home, a place where he has been able to start and continue his career.
“Detroit is an amazing city,” he said. “It has been a place where I have had a career for 30 years. I felt it was a really good time to pay homage to that.”
The album release party for “Doin’ the D” will be on Tuesday, July 14, at Seldom Blues. There will be performances by Zonjic, Maysa, JeffLorber, Ken Navarro, James Lloyd and the Motor City Horns. Tickets are $75. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7:30 p.m.
