AUG. 15 WALK FOR EDUCATION SETS $200,000 FUNDRAISING GOAL FOR UNCF

Special to the Michigan Chronicle

"A mind is a terrible thing to waste."

These words, long associated with the United Negro College Fund, are as relevant today as perhaps any time in our nation's history. And that is why hundreds of people throughout the community are expected to gather Aug. 15 on the Detroit River Walk for the 21st annual UNCF Walk for Education.

The goal of this year's event is to raise $200,000 for UNCF.

"When UNCF started the walkathon in 1988 we never imagined it would grow the way it has over the years," said UNCF area development director Leslie Andrews. "We have the distinct honor of having been the first indoor walk but with the growth of such incredible participation over the years, we can proudly strut on Detroit's newest jewel in her crown, the Detroit River Walk on Aug. 15.

"The dollars raised for this event will assist students, many from right here in Michigan, with completing their college degrees which will prepare our next generation of leaders."

The 5K walk along the Detroit River Walk will begin at Rivard Plaza. Participants will walk the entire route along the shoreline of the Detroit River from Rivard Plaza to Joe Louis Arena and back to the Plaza.

"This year is going to be special and I would encourage anyone that cares about young people and understands the importance of a good education to join us on Aug. 15," said event chairman Frank Taylor.

"A college degree today is what a high school diploma was in the past for many careers and thanks to the UNCF, many young people who might not have had an opportunity to pursue a college education will now have that chance."

Among this year's participants will be an enthusiastic contingent representing Comerica Bank.

"I think I can speak for Comerica's African- American network, as well as colleagues from throughout the bank, and say Comerica is honored to participate in the 21st annual UNCF Walk for Education," said Comerica Senior Vice President George L. Richards Jr., the bank's executive champion for this year's event.

"Just as Comerica is in business to help people succeed, the United Negro College Fund is committed to helping promising students attend college, paving the way for future success. It's a cause that is very close to my heart as a proud graduate of Fisk University."

For sponsorship and team information for the Aug. 15 UNCF Walk for Education, please contact Leslie Andrews, UNCF area development director, at (313) 873-1500, ext. 1501, or leslie.andrews@uncf.org. Registration is $25 for adults, $10 for children 6-12 and free for children under 6; program begins at 8 a.m. with the 5K walk scheduled to start at 9 a.m.

UNCF's mission is "to enhance the quality of education by providing financial assistance to deserving students, raising operating funds for member colleges and universities, and increasing access to technology for students and faculty at historically Black colleges and universities."

Since its inception in 1944, UNCF has grown to become the oldest and most successful African- American higher education assistance organization. For additional information on UNCF, please visit www.uncf.org.
